CL Biography

A member of the K-pop girl group 2NE1, the Korean sensation CL later started a solo career as a rapper and vocalist. She released her own debut single, "Hello Bitches," in 2015 in addition to appearing on tracks with artists like Diplo and Psy.

She spent the last part of the decade working on collaborations and giving a performance at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics before turning back to her solo work in earnest with the EP series In the Name of Love and her debut album, Alpha, in 2021.

Born Chae-rin Lee in Seoul, CL spent a significant portion of her youth living in Japan and France. She grew fond of music while growing up by listening to singers such as Queen, Lauryn Hill, Madonna, and Lil' Kim. In 2007, she made her debut on Big Bang's "Hot Issue," and then in 2009, she joined 2NE1, making her K-pop debut.

As the quartet's primary rapper, CL added some edge to the group, which later rose to prominence as one of the top K-pop artists of the late 2000s.

She appeared on "The Leaders" by G-Dragon and Teddy Park in 2009, and she also collaborated with Minzy, another member of 2NE1, on the song "Please Don't Go."

With the release of To Anyone and its follow-up, Crush, 2NE1 even managed to enter the Top Ten of the Billboard World Charts in the years that followed.

With "The Baddest Female," CL made her solo debut in 2013. CL produced an uplifting hymn that reminded people of M.I.A. by riding a buoyant hip-hop beat and a dubstep break (who would later appear on a remix of her follow-up track, "Hello Bitches").
