Unconventional Date Ideas for the Thrill-Seeking Couple

Unconventional Date Ideas for the Thrill-Seeking Couple

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, and we’re beside ourselves with excitement! However we know as well as anybody that valentine festivities can tend to be more stressful and monotonous than enjoyable. The good news is, they don’t have to be! In these ever-evolving times, there are heaps of alternatives to the usual dinner at an overbooked, overly fancy restaurant that’s probably going to overcharge you for food too.

If you and your partner like to consider yourselves unorthodox, are tired of the worn-out wine and dine routine, or are simply looking for something novel and exciting to do this Valentine’s Day, we’ve got just the list for you!

Rock Climbing

Easily one of the most underrated activities in the Metro, rock climbing can be the perfect date for adrenaline-junkie couples—but don’t take my word for it, just wait till you get to the top of a wall!

Walls with varying difficulty levels and an assortment of routes will test your balance, strength, wit and finesse, but be careful or you may find yourself addicted, constantly coming back for more. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

What makes rock climbing such an ideal date idea is that it’s an activity best done with a partner. You’ll need someone to belay you while you climb (and who you can return the favor for), but beyond that, it can be extremely helpful to have someone coaching and encouraging you on your way up, especially if you undertake to try out difficult routes.

Oh, and did we mention the insane adrenaline high you get when you reach the top? It’s worth mentioning twice.

Group Exercise Classes

A fantastic way to have fun as a couple is to get the endorphins (and serotonin, dopamine, and a host of other tremendously beneficial hormones) flowing. When you’re working out with a partner, a banging playlist, and flashing neon lights, it feels less like a chore and way more like a party.

Taking exercise classes together can be a great way to spend the day, burn calories, get that post-workout glow, and who knows, maybe even discover a new talent? Whether it’s cycling, yoga, pilates, HIIT, aerial silk, or dance, group exercise studios are almost ubiquitous in modern-day Manila, making finding a studio and hobby that you’ll enjoy easy and accessible.

Picnic

We’re not even going to bother romanticizing picnics—itchy grass, insects galore, the sticky humidity––suffice it to say this type of date may require roughing it out a bit. But once you get over the mild discomfort and crack open a bottle of wine or two (or three), being surrounded by nature and the one you love in the cool February air can make for a lovely, serene, and unique Valentine’s date. Brownie points if you go out of your way to cook food for your S.O. rather than buying takeout or making pagawa! It’s a thoughtful personal touch that they’ll appreciate, guaranteed.

Beach trip

From the fresh, uncontaminated air, to the balmy breeze blowing through your hair, to the gorgeous, sweltering sun beating down on your skin, to the warm sand settling in between your toes, to the faint sound of the waves crashing against the shore, everything about the beach screams perfect backdrop for romance. Fortunately enough, Valentine’s Day happens to fall on a Friday this year, so carving out time to spend a romantic weekend by the water most definitely isn’t out of the question.

Contrary to popular belief, lazing around in the great outdoors (although we definitely aren’t opposed to this) isn’t the only thing to do at the beach! Whether it’s taking a surfing lesson, trying out water sports, finding a nearby hiking spot, jumping from falls, or food tripping at local establishments, nature lovers will find there are plenty of beach activities at their disposal.

Board Game Cafes

If you can’t get out of town, aren’t inclined to have a meal whilst sprawled out on park grass, don’t have the energy for a bar crawl, or would simply prefer to have dinner served to you in the comfort of an airconditioned establishment (we hold nothing against you), board game cafes may be your most viable option.

With an endless array of board and card games to choose from, both traditional and novel alike, you and your partner may catch yourselves playing the entire Valentine’s Day away. And you don’t need an entire group of people to have fun either––there are plenty of games that can be enjoyed by only two players. Just ask the cafe’s resident game master for some suggestions!

Playing against your partner can be a great way to get to know each other better, have a blast, and positively channel all of your competitive energy… provided a fight doesn’t ensue.

Escape Rooms

If playing against your partner is a little precarious (please, I beg you, don’t ruin your holiday with petty arguments over games), then maybe it’s best to play a game that entails you two working together as a team instead. In escape rooms, you and your team exist within an elaborate storyline and face a series of problems that you’ll have to solve in order to escape before the time runs out. It’s an exhilarating role-playing game that will challenge your smarts, problem-solving skills, lateral thinking, ability to operate under pressure, and teamwork.

Pro tip: Teams who escape a room within a certain time frame are entitled to a bunch of discounts, perks, and even prizes. Ask the escape room about their promotions for finishers! Similarly, if you make it to the leaderboard, you get your picture hung on the wall of fame, plus bragging rights for an entire month.
