Ari’s ‘7 Rings’ is the 2019 Mood for All Strong and Independent women
After breaking the internet with ‘Thank U, Next’, Ariana Grande drops another new song about being the strong independent woman that she is. ‘7 Rings’ is Ariana’s latest MV, carrying a strongly Barbie-in-the-ghetto aesthetic.
The song starts with a familiar tune that we all grew up with, The Sound of Music’s My Favorite Things. This is not the first time Ariana got inspired by classic tunes and gave them a reno, she’s done this with ‘Put Your Hearts Up’ and ‘Popular’. The difference now is that it’s way more sultry and less PG.
Unlike ‘Thank U, Next’, ‘7 Rings’ talks about Ari living it up and loving her girlfriends ala-#HoesBeforeBros type. She starts the song with “Yeah, breakfast at Tiffany’s and bottles of bubbles, girls with tattoos who like getting in trouble, lashes and diamonds, ATM machines, buy myself all of my favorite things.”
The whole song is a far cry from Julie Andrew’s cream colored ponies and crisp apple strudels. She even topples over a champagne tower at some point. Let’s not forget at the end part of the song she sings, “Whoever said money can’t solve your problems? Must not have had enough money to solve ’em,” BURN.
So why the title? She and her friends went to Tiffany’s one day, had too much champagne, and Ari ended up buying rings for her and her besties. “It was very insane and funny,” Ari teases in an interview. “And on the way back to the studio, Njomza was like ‘bitch, this gotta be a song lol’. So we wrote it that afternoon.”
While the song highlights Ari’s sky-high lifestyle (see 7 Rings lyric: I got my receipts be looking like phone numbers), there’s still hints of her break-up with Pete Davidson. In the lyrics, she sings “Wearing a ring, but ain’t gon’ be no “Mrs.”, Buy matching diamonds for six of my bitches, I’d rather spoil all my friends with my riches.”
As for the aesthetic, Ari’s latest video is dipped in pink, diamonds, and champagne. Again, if Barbie came out with a 2019 version, this would be it.
There’s also a bit of Japanese elements in the MV, i.e. sushi, Japanese champagne, and Kawaii toys on the kitchen countertop. Ari has been very vocal about her love for Japanese culture and just recently, she showed off her Pokemon Eevee tat with ‘Let’s Sing’ written beneath.
Let’s not forget how many times she repeated “I want it, I got it, I want it, I got it.” A friendly reminder to all of us to get our shit together this 2019 so we can enjoy all of Ari’s favorite things… eventually. #Goalz
