Whether you can say 2016 has been your best year or your worst, we can all rejoice in the fact that it’s finally freaking over. Now, it’s that time of the year when everyone on all social media outlets go “new year, new me”. But the chances of some people actually changing are slim to none, right? Don’t be one of those guys. Remember when Kylie said 2016 was the year of realizing things? Well now that they’re realized, it’s time to start the year of setting things into motion.

Here’s how you can improve your life this 2017.

1. Don’t settle for a relationship for the sake of being in one.

As someone who used to describe their type as breathing and with a pulse, I know all too well about settling. But just because that fuccboi or that hoegirl is keeping you company right now doesn’t mean they actually love you or that they’ll stick around forever. Better to be #singleAF than being miserable in a relationship and turning Drake’s Fake Love into your life’s theme song. I say drop the fake-ass players.

2. List down and learn from your mistakes

Of course there’s no such thing as perfection. Even the people we look up to all make mistakes. With 366 days in 2016, there were a lot of chances to make your own. I.e. that time you got too turnt and slipped in your own vomit (and ended up covered in it), or the time you recklessly tweeted an opinion that offended a bunch of people. Time to start #adulting and learn from past experiences. Lest you want to be stuck in an unending cycle of fucked-uppery.

3. Love your job but don’t let it take over your life.

You’ve got to love your job. It’s as simple as that. We all need to hustle to be able to afford rent and day-to-day expenses, those bottles at Valkyrie, and basically every millennial’s priority this year: #2017travels. But even so, our work isn’t the only thing that’s important””you can’t let it consume your entire life. You’ve got to find the perfect balance between your career, family, self and your relationships. (But that doesn’t mean you have to forget to actually do your job and do it well.)

4. Aim not only to look your best, but to be your healthiest self too.

You can lose 35kg within four months over a diet of nothing but eggs, peanuts, celery and water. But do you know what else comes with that lifestyle? Getting sick a lot, not enough energy to power through the day, and your friends and family calling you anorexic. Don’t forget that the goal here is not only to have a better looking body, but to be a healthier person in general, and being healthy consists of eating right, working out and having enough sleep. Keep on grinding.

5. Treat yourself

This one, of course, requires you to save money first. Work hard, start ballin’ right? You deserve an /ESCAPE from the stresses of everyday life. Invest in experiences that’ll make your outlook on life more exciting. Learn how to ride a horse (amongst other things), start a dance class, or take a literal hike. Don’t want to get too physical? Learn a new language and eat great food. Free yourself through your activities.

6. Realize that New Year’s isn’t the only time for change

You have 365 days in a year to better yourself. If you know you needed to change that badly, you can consciously make the adult decision to improve in, say, July, just as much as you can on the first of January. The new year isn’t the only time to make changes in your life, all it does is give it a little bit more of a dramatic flare.

Happy new year, everyone! I hope you all have a great year of self-improvement ahead of you! Have any tips on bettering yourself, too? Tell us in the comments below!
