The day of the dead or Dia De Lost Muertos originated in Central and South Mexico and is celebrated through a 2-day festivity. It is officially celebrated on November 1st of every year.

The Theme

Even if the theme is death the celebration actually expresses the good memories of the people that have gone to the other side. It is a commemoration of what their life was like and how they lived it.

The Ofrenda

An altar is also most commonly known as an ofrenda in this region and is known to be one of the key parts of the celebration. This is where offerings, pictures, memoirs, and mementos are placed so that the dead will see it when they come back.

Food For The Dead

It is believed that the spirits who travel back are often hungry and thirsty and they are offered food on their ofrendas. They also have a specific bread called Pan De Muerto which is usually sweet and is often baked during this occasion as an offering to the spirits.
