2018 and All the Filipinas that Owned this Year

Gone are the days when Filipinas are stereotyped as mahinhin and conservative Maria Claras. Welcome to 2018: where Filipinas slay, slay, slay! Be it at the workforce, the field of journalism, forefront of entertainment, or conquering the universe, WE FILIPINAS GOT THIS.

What’s so great about this, you might ask, as their achievement isn’t yours? These Filipinas breaking rules and shocking the world means a world of opportunities for us because stereotypes have been broken and standards were set. It reminds the world that Filipinas are much more than what other people think.

We listed down the top Filipinas who made us proud this 2018.

Maria Ressa

In the #Philippines, a 55-year-old woman named Maria Ressa steers @rappler, an online #news site she helped found, through a superstorm of the two most formidable forces in the information universe: #socialmedia and a populist President with authoritarian inclinations. Rappler has chronicled the violent drug war and extrajudicial killings of President Rodrigo #Duterte that have left some 12,000 people dead, according to a January estimate from @humanrightswatch. Duterte has called Rappler “fake news” and banned its reporters from presidential events. The government recently charged Ressa with tax fraud—a move widely viewed as an attempted crackdown on Rappler’s reporting. She faces a possible 10-year sentence. Ressa is one of the Guardians, TIME’s Person of the Year 2018. #TIMEPOY Read the full story at TIME.com/POY2018. Photograph by @moisessaman—@magnumphotos for TIME

Journalist and Time’s Person of the Year 2018, Maria Ressa showed the world that there’s still good people in the media amidst fake news. Often the target of misogyny and hate, this Filipina lands Time’s most coveted annual cover. Haters, where u at?

Margarita Fores

Aside from being the Asia’s Best Female Chef of 2016, this Filipino was also knighted by the Italian government as a Cavaliere dell’Ordine della Stella d’Italia (Order of the Star of Italy). Her knighthood shows that Filipinas are not just great with work but also in the kitchen. #AllAroundWoman

“I have so much admiration and new appreciation for you. You have survived and endured so much, with grace.” 2 sentences from a recent conversation i shall forever treasure… i was reaching out to a man who touched my life w/ genuine friendship & kindness… i’ve survived enough storms to know that hearing encouraging words when your humanity deserves acknowledgment- that gesture of support becomes an affirmation that there are people who will love & celebrate you- come what may. June of 2017, he was the one who wanted me to be a part of his passion project. It’s FATE that a man i’d never met but had long been a vocal fan of, championed for us to be represented; and it was his vision that a Filipina would portray his “princess”… 🇵🇭 i’ve learned enough to not have made @crazyrichasians a referendum on me & my last name… it would be a disservice to all the talented, passionate, and generous people i’d worked with for people who hated me and/or my family to not give this beautiful movie a chance. So i purposely stayed off social media. To those who are like me, those who read the trilogy, watched & fell in love w/ @crazyrichasians- you answered my prayers because @kevinkwanbooks, @jonmchu & @wbpictures deserved to feel our gratitude for shining a special light on us Filipinos, the “superfans” in Kevin’s words. If you don’t like my words, stop reading, do us all a favor & unfollow me. I’m stating hard won TRUTHS: To all who tried to break me, all you did was let me prove to myself how STRONG i am… i am standing without having needed to step on others, and i didn’t demean or sacrifice the values & principles my parents instilled in me. On my own- i rebuilt myself… dahil yung sinubukan patumbahin ng paulit ulit- namulat sa katotohanan na kinaya nyang hindi sumuko. She now sees that her MISSION is to make others see from her open book life-that people should wear our scars with dignity because they are proof we valiantly faced life’s battles…that nobody should have to accept being belittled, insulted or judged unfairly. Do no harm yet never let anybody get comfortable trying to dehumanize you. #laban

Staring in Crazy Rich Asians as Princess Intal, tita Krissy makes us proud by starring in Kevin Kwan’s massive movie hit. Representing not only the Filipinas, but also all the Asians who get called yellow and chinky-eyed.

Despite her corned beef shopping issues, Heart still makes us proud. As one of the real Crazy Rich Asians, Heart flaunts that Filipinas everywhere have taste and class.

Hidelyn Diaz

The first Filipino ever to bring home a medal from the 2018 ASEAN Games. In the Rio Olympics, she also brought home the silver medal. This girl is carrying 207 kilograms of pure steel when we can’t even carry our bills! YOU GO GIRL!

Special Mention: YOU!

Whatever you’re going through, wherever you’re from, we’re proud of all the Filipina women who conquered 2018 like a true kween!
